Initiation of transcription by RNA polymerase II (Pol II) requires general transcription factors to assemble the Pol II pre-initiation complex (PIC) (Hampsey 1998). PIC assembly on both TATA-containing and TATA-less promoters can be nucleated by the general transcription factors TFIID or B-TFIID, which are comprised of the TATA-binding protein (TBP) and TBP-associated factors (TAFIIs) (Bell and Tora 1999; Albright and Tjian 2000).
